T
he second day of creation – the Firmament
Genesis tells us that on the second day of creation God said:
“Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water. God made the expanse, and it separated the water which was below the expanse from the water which was above the expanse. And it was so. God called the expanse Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day”. Genesis 1:6 – 8 The Jewish Bible.
The world at this time was a swirling mass of gases and water with no solid land yet. To my understanding the firmament or expanse, which God created is the sky. In fact even though the King James version calls this firmament heaven, the English translation of the Jewish Bible says that God called it sky. I understood this firmament to be the sky and space, which separates our universe from whatever is beyond.
We saw in the previous study where we discussed the Big Bang Theory that the universe, in a matter of seconds, rapidly expanded from the size of the pinpoint and continued to expand. It seems to me that this is the same thing as the expanse that Genesis talks about, which was created on the second day. Notice in fact the use of the word expanse in the Bible to describe this, and the word expansion/inflation of the universe used by scientists. So it seems to me that right after the Big Bang, the beginning of the expansion, the universe expanded creating the space which surrounds what would in the future house the earth, moon, sun, stars, planets, and whatever else is out there.
If we agree that the concept of a day in Genesis is not necessarily the equivalent of our 24 hour day, but could be much longer, or perhaps much shorter, then we can say that this expanse in the Bible, and expansion/inflation in science, occurred on the second day of creation.
How could Moses have known this exact sequence of events? Well you know my thoughts on this matter.
