CHAPTER 1. SHI-GEDAY AND THE LION
The river sparkled and shimmered in the late afternoon sun as a group of women finished their wash. Children jumped and splashed in the water under the stern gaze of a group of young warriors protecting them from danger. It would soon be late afternoon, a time when wild animals came to the river to drink. Although breathtakingly beautiful, the land was fraught with dangers.
Like most African countries, Ethiopia is filled with lush green vegetation, tall rich trees, and gently swaying grasses–luxuriously green during the rainy season, and honey golden during the dry season. Majestic waterfalls, beautiful sunsets, and exquisite dawns are all decorated with exotic birds, which seem to have flown through a shower of multi-colored paint from the heavens above. The whole country looks as though it was created by an artist–a master of mixing and matching colors.
As the warriors watched over the women and children, there was a sudden shrieking from the monkeys high up in the trees. A flock of birds took off in panicked flight. Instantly aware that danger was approaching, and taking into account the lateness of the hour, the warriors gathered their group to head back to the city.
